In 1984, Saab designer Leif Mellberg came up with the Saab 906 Turbo — the largest Saab ever
constructed! Not only was it a wagon of astronomical proportions, but this car also had
three axles totaling six wheels!

Being the 1980s, this was long before SUVs and crossovers came into the mix. In fact,
minivans had just gone into production at Chrysler in 1984. Subsequently, Mellberg was slightly ahead of the times in designing such an enormous vehicle for the masses. Were it to have been presented perhaps a decade later, the 906 Turbo concept may have had a shot at production. As shown in the above photo, it retained many normal characteristics of a regular sized car. The front end was textbook Saab albeit a few custom changes. Alas, it was not meant to be.

With such an enormous passenger and cargo compartment, and technology growing at a rapid rate, this Saab needed to feel like the future. Mellberg did not want to disappoint, and the car was equipped with a video screen, refrigerator, freezer, and heating cabinets, as well as a police radio and radar detector. This was a concept car with a bit of an identity crisis — part wagon, part van and part motor home!
