The Douglas C-47/R4D Skytrain served as a vital workhorse for NASA and its predecessor, NACA, at Edwards Air Force Base from 1952 to 1984. These aircraft were used for transporting personnel and equipment between research centers and notably conducted approximately 100 tows for the M2-F1 lifting body program.
